“LMAC fosters accessibility to art in community” (The Daily Item)

 by

LYNN — The Lynn Museum & Arts Center (LMAC) will host its final Second Saturday event of the year this weekend as a part of its wider efforts to improve accessibility to art in the community.

Originally founded in 1897 as the Lynn Historical Society, LMAC offers a range of exhibitions and programs designed to engage and enrich the community of Lynn, according to its website. LMAC also provides affordable studio space for people in the community, such as artists and musicians.

Doneeca Thurston-Chavez, executive director of LMAC and a Lynn native, said the museum displays always have a Lynn connection and are designed to celebrate the rich diversity of the community.

“Lynn is who we are. It is why we are here,” Thurston-Chavez said.

The Second Saturday series was started with the intention of giving community members more access to art and culture at the museum. Admission is free to the event. Participants can explore the museum and engage in various activities, such as art making workshops, lectures, or new exhibition openings, depending on the day. The museum also has free admission on Wednesdays, from 3 to 7 p.m.

“Our community is so varied and so beautiful and diverse, and so utilizing artwork from [people] who have been here generations, or are newly here in our community, it helps paint that fuller picture of Lynn,” Thurston-Chavez added.

Recently, LMAC was also one of seven nonprofits selected by the Social Innovation Forum (SIF) to participate in its 2025 Social Innovator Accelerator program. The two-year program is designed to help nonprofit organizations “gain visibility, expand their networks, and connect with philanthropic and in-kind resources to accelerate their work,” according to an SIF press release.
