Black History Month Craft: King’s Scepter

Since we can’t gather in person for our annual Free Family Day for Black History Month, we are bringing the celebration to you! Weekly crafts available for curbside pickup, virtual story time, and more.

Our third craft for the month: King’s Scepter!
Call 781-581-6200 to reserve your craft kits. Limit three craft kits per household.

Did you know that communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire used to have Black Kings? As part of the Negro Election Day holiday, which began right here in Lynn, slaves were allowed one holiday each year to take a day off from work, celebrate their African heritage, and some communities would even elect a Black King or Governor. Create your own scepter to celebrate the holiday!

Learn more about Negro Election Day in our upcoming exhibition “Untold Stories: A History of Black People in Lynn”.
